KOSA Passes House Committee Hurdle

Bill hands an antichoiceanti-LGBTQ+ win to Project 2025 architects

Sep 18, 2024

Today, lawmakers in the House Committee on Energy and Commerce held a markup on the Kids Online Safety Act (KOSA), which would restrict teens’ access to social media. The bill has been championed by regressive voices like the Heritage Foundation, which sponsored the extremist ‘Project 2025’ agenda for Donald Trump’s second term. KOSA was favorably reported out of committee.

“Anti-choice, anti-LGBTQ+ supporters of KOSA have not been shy in saying the quiet part out loud,” said Todd O’Boyle, Senior Director of Technology Policy at Chamber of Progress. “Project 2025’s architects are promoting KOSA as a means to continue attacking women seeking reproductive care and teens seeking a refuge online. Democrats should not enable their agenda.”

On Tuesday, Chamber of Progress sent a letter to House Energy and Commerce Ranking Member Frank Pallone highlighting how KOSA could further endanger reproductive rights. In July, Chamber of Progress joined a coalition of advocates – including LGBTQ+ and civil rights groups – in urging the Senate to oppose its companion version of the bill.
